Choose your decking boards
- Green treated softwood decking: pressure treated UC3/UC4 pine, great value and easy to work, with reeded or flat faces.
- Brown treated softwood decking: the same durable pine with a warm brown colour.
- Anti-slip decking: boards with gritted inserts for safe grip in wet weather, ideal for steps, ramps, pool surrounds and public spaces. See anti-slip decking.
- Austrian and Siberian larch decking: naturally durable, dense softwood that needs no chemical treatment, including pre-aged silver-grey boards.
- Thermowood decking: heat treated redwood that is stable, durable and resin-free.
- Yellow Balau hardwood decking: a very hard, dense tropical hardwood for premium, long-lasting decks.
Sleepers for landscaping
Use oak sleepers (100 x 200mm, PEFC certified) or green treated softwood sleepers for raised beds, retaining walls, steps, borders and garden edging.
Decking substructure
A deck is only as good as the frame beneath it. Use treated C24 structural joists (for example 47 x 150mm) at 400mm centres for domestic decks, with adjustable supports or posts, a weed membrane and stainless or coated decking screws. See C24 timber.
Smooth or reeded decking?
Reeded (grooved) faces help water drain and add texture; smooth faces are more comfortable barefoot and easier to clean. Many of our boards are reversible, so you can choose on site. Anti-slip inserts give the best grip of all.

How far apart should decking joists be?
400mm centres for most domestic decks, closer for diagonal boards or heavy use.
Should I leave gaps between deck boards?
Yes, 5 to 6mm between boards lets water drain and allows for movement.
How do I stop decking going slippery?
Keep it clean, allow airflow underneath and choose anti-slip boards in shady or wet areas.
Do I need to oil my deck?
Oiling once or twice a year with a decking oil protects the timber and keeps its colour. See finishes.
