Close board fencing with featheredge boards
A featheredge fence, also called a close board fence, is built on site from vertical tapered boards nailed to horizontal rails between strong posts. Because each board overlaps its neighbour, there are no gaps, giving excellent privacy, security and wind resistance. It is one of the strongest and longest-lasting fence types available in the UK.
Why choose featheredge fencing?
- Strong in high winds: built in place with posts and rails, it is far sturdier than lightweight panels.
- Fits any slope: boards follow the ground, ideal for sloping or uneven gardens.
- Easy to repair: replace a single damaged board instead of a whole panel.
- Total privacy: overlapping boards leave no gaps.
How to build a featheredge fence
- Set fence posts at up to 3m centres (2.4m is ideal for strength).
- Fix two or three horizontal rails (arris or 3 x 2 rails) between the posts.
- Fit a gravel board at the bottom to keep boards off the ground.
- Nail boards vertically, thick edge to thin, overlapping each by about 25mm, using a spacer for even lines.
- Add a capping rail along the top to shed rain.
How many featheredge boards do I need?
With 125mm boards overlapped by 25mm you need around 10 boards per metre of fence. With 150mm boards and the same overlap, allow about 8 per metre.
Featheredge fencing FAQs
How long does a featheredge fence last?
A well built, pressure treated featheredge fence can last 15 to 25 years.
Should I paint my featheredge fence?

Can I use featheredge for cladding?
Yes, laid horizontally it becomes traditional weatherboarding. See featheredge cladding.
