Decking board profiles
The profile of a decking board affects grip, appearance and how well it sheds water. Most boards are either grooved, reeded or smooth, and each suits a different situation. Choosing the right one makes a deck safer and more comfortable to use.
Common profiles
- Grooved or ribbed boards have channels along the length that drain water and add grip, a good all-round choice for family gardens.
- Reeded or fine ribbed boards have a softer texture and a more refined look.
- Smooth boards give a flat, modern finish but are more slippery when wet, so they suit sheltered, dry areas.
Where grip matters most, such as steps, ramps and shaded decks, look at anti-slip decking.
Choosing a timber
Our decking boards range includes thermally modified, hardwood, larch and treated softwood options. Durable species last longer without chemical treatment, whereas treated softwood is the economical route.
Installing
Lay boards across joists at 400mm centres for 28mm boards, with a gap of 5 to 8mm for drainage and expansion. Fix with two stainless screws per joist, and pre-drill hardwoods. Ensure the substructure falls gently away from the building so water drains, using decking substructure joists.
How much to order
Measure the deck area and add 10% for waste and cutting. Divide by the covering width of one board to find the length you need. For a ready-planned project see our decking kits, and order a free sample to check colour and grip.
