Fire retardant cladding explained
Untreated timber cladding typically achieves Euroclass D. In some situations, Building Regulations Approved Document B (and the equivalents in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) require external walls to meet a higher reaction-to-fire performance, for example where a building is close to a boundary or for certain building types and heights. Fire retardant treated cladding is impregnated or coated with a fire retardant that slows ignition and flame spread, allowing timber to reach classes such as Euroclass B-s1,d0 or C.
When do you need fire retardant cladding?
- Walls within 1m of a boundary.
- Some commercial, residential and public buildings, depending on use and height.
- Escape routes and some internal applications.
- Where specified by your architect, fire engineer or insurer.
Rules depend on the building, so always confirm requirements with Building Control. Note that in England combustible materials, including treated timber, are banned from the external walls of relevant buildings 18m and over, and restricted on some residential buildings over 11m.

Installing and maintaining treated cladding
Install as normal cladding with a ventilated cavity. If you cut boards, treat cut ends as the manufacturer instructs, and use only compatible top-coat finishes so the fire performance is not affected.
