Square edge boards for cladding and screens

Square boards, sometimes called square edge or rectangular section boards, have no tongue, groove or rebate. They are simply planed or sawn on four sides, which makes them extremely versatile. They are used for open-gap cladding, fence screens, slatted feature walls and cover strips.

Typical uses

  • Rainscreen cladding with a deliberate gap between boards, which shows the dark membrane behind.
  • Privacy screens and slatted fence panels, see fence and screens.
  • Soffits, pergolas and garden structures.
  • Internal slat walls and ceilings.

Spacing and fixing

Because the boards do not interlock, you choose the gap, commonly 5 to 20mm. A consistent gap needs a spacer, and any open gap needs a dark breather membrane or painted battens behind. Face fix with two stainless screws per board at each batten, or use a slim nail. Keep battens at 400 to 600mm centres for external walls, and provide ventilation top and bottom with cladding insect mesh.

Choosing a timber

Durable species such as larch, western red cedar and thermally modified timber suit exterior use. Compare them in our cladding guide.

How much to order

For open-gap cladding, divide the wall width by the board width plus the gap to count boards across, then multiply by the length needed. Add 10% for waste. For bespoke sizes or lengths, use our bespoke cladding service, and ask for a sample first from free timber samples.
