Architraves for doors and windows
Architraves frame door and window openings, hiding the gap between the lining and the wall and giving the opening a neat, finished look. They are normally fitted alongside skirting boards, so choosing both in a matching profile gives a consistent room. Check each product page for profile, width, species and finish.
Where they are used
Interior doorways, window reveals, internal openings and wide archways. In period-style homes a deeper moulded profile is common, while contemporary interiors often use a plain square or chamfered edge.
How much to order
- A standard single door needs two uprights and one head, so around 5 to 5.5 metres of architrave per side of the door.
- Both sides of the wall need architrave if the door is hung in an internal wall.
- Add 10% for waste, as mitre cuts use up more length than you expect.
Fixing and finishing
Mark a small reveal of about 5 to 6 mm from the inner edge of the lining, then fix with finishing nails and a little adhesive. Cut mitres with a mitre saw for tight corners, fill the holes, caulk the outer edge and then prime and paint or stain. See our fixings and accessories for nails and adhesives.
