Ship lap cladding profile
Ship lap is a classic timber cladding profile. Each board has a rebate cut along both edges, so neighbouring boards overlap and sit slightly proud of each other. This creates a distinctive stepped shadow line and sheds rain quickly, which is why it has been used on sheds, barns and houses for generations.
Where it is used
- Garden rooms, sheds and outbuildings, see our garden buildings page.
- House extensions and feature gables.
- Internal walls and ceilings when a traditional look is wanted.
Choosing a timber
Ship lap is available in several species. Larch cladding and western red cedar weather to a natural silver grey or can be oiled to keep their colour. Thermally modified options are worth considering where stability matters, see thermally modified timber. Browse the full external cladding range to compare.
Fixing and spacing
Fix boards horizontally on vertical battens at 400 to 600mm centres, with a ventilated cavity behind. Start at the bottom and work upwards, with the rebate facing so water runs out, not in. Use two stainless nails or screws per board at each batten, positioned through the overlap so the next board partly covers them. Leave the small allowance the profile provides for seasonal movement.
How much to order
Measure the wall area, subtract openings, and divide by the covering width of one board, not the overall width, since the overlap reduces coverage. Add 10% for waste and cutting. Order a free sample from our free timber samples page to check colour and profile before committing.
