Sauna wall panels and cladding
Wall panels line the inside of a sauna, creating the warm, enclosed feel and protecting the insulation behind. They are usually tongue and groove boards fixed in a continuous run, so the profile and species both matter. The panels should stay comfortable to touch when hot and give off little or no resin.
Choosing a species
- Aspen: pale and low in resin, with a quiet, uniform look.
- Thermally modified spruce or pine: darker, stable and low in resin. Find out more about thermally modified timber for saunas.
- Western red cedar: aromatic and lightweight, with an attractive grain. Browse western red cedar.
Steer clear of resinous softwood on hot surfaces, as resin can weep from the boards.
Planning the lining
A traditional sauna wall has a framed structure, insulation, a foil vapour barrier and then horizontal or vertical boards over a ventilation gap. Check your design carefully, as the build-up affects safety and performance. Panels go on walls and often the ceiling, while seating needs different boards. See sauna bench boards for those.
How much to buy
Measure the total wall and ceiling area, deduct doors and windows, and divide by the covering width of one board to get the number of boards. Add 10% for waste, more if you have many angled cuts.
Fixing
- Use secret nailing through the tongue so no fixings show on the heated face.
- Choose stainless steel nails or staples, available under screws, nails and accessories.
- Leave small gaps at the edges to allow movement as the timber dries and heats.
Finish and maintenance
Most sauna interiors are left bare. You can wipe the boards with a damp cloth and lightly sand marks. Always air the sauna after use so it dries out.
Order a sample first
Because colour and scent differ between species, a free timber sample is a sensible first step. For advice, call 0161 504 0011. Our sauna wall panels are timber supply only for garden rooms, not finished buildings. Prices include VAT and UK delivery, and many items ship next day. See the wider sauna timber range too.
