Western red cedar is a lightweight softwood that is naturally resistant to decay, which makes it a popular choice for garden fencing and screening. Ready-made cedar fence screens save time compared with building from individual boards, and they give a neat, consistent finish.

Where to use screens
Screens work along boundaries, around bins and hot tubs, beside patios and decks, or to divide a garden into zones. Horizontal slat designs suit modern gardens, while closer boarding offers more privacy. Check local planning rules on height, which in many cases limits a boundary fence to 2 metres.
Installation tips
- Set posts at the right spacing for the panel width, and check they are plumb before fixing.
- Keep the base of the panel above the soil, to avoid constant dampness.
- Pre-drill near edges to prevent splitting.
- Use stainless steel fixings, as cedar can stain and corrode plain steel. A2 is fine inland, and A4 is better near the sea.

Measure the length of fence and divide by the panel width. Round up to a whole number of panels and add posts. If you are cutting panels to fit, allow for the offcuts.
