Brown treated timber decking
Brown treated decking is softwood, usually pine or spruce, that has been pressure treated with a preservative to protect against rot and insects. The treatment gives it a brown colour, which looks consistent from the start. It is the most economical route to a durable deck, and it is popular for family gardens and larger areas where cost matters.
Strengths
- Lower cost per square metre than hardwood or thermally modified boards.
- Light and easy to cut and fix.
- Protected against fungal decay and insects by pressure treatment.
Points to know
Softwood moves more than hardwood, so expect some cupping, checking and surface cracks as it dries. Choose well-dried boards, and fix with two stainless or coated decking screws per joist. Pre-drilling near board ends reduces splitting. The treatment colour will fade over time, so a brown decking stain or oil from finishes and treatments keeps it fresh. Always treat cut ends with a preservative designed for the purpose.
Installing
Fix across joists at 400mm centres with a gap of 5 to 8mm, as treated boards often shrink as they dry. The frame should be treated for ground contact, see decking substructure joists. Make sure the deck falls gently away from buildings and has airflow beneath.
Ordering
Calculate the area and add 10% for waste. For steps and slopes, an anti-slip board is a safer choice. See the full decking boards range or a planned layout from decking kits. Phone 0161 504 0011 if you need guidance.
