Green treated decking
Green treated decking is softwood, usually pine or spruce, that has been pressure treated with a preservative to resist rot and insect attack. The green tint comes from the treatment. It is a budget-friendly route to a garden deck, but it needs good installation and some regular care to last.
Treated softwood or something more durable?
Treated softwood costs less than most alternatives, but it can move more as it dries, so check boards for twisting and cupping when they arrive. If you want a more stable, longer-lasting deck, compare it with Siberian larch, Thermowood or yellow balau, or browse all decking boards.
Planning the deck
- Build on a level frame with joists at 400 mm centres. See decking substructure joists.
- Leave a 5 to 8 mm gap between boards so water drains away.
- Keep the space below ventilated and cover the ground with a weed membrane.
- Use pedestals when building on hard surfaces.
- Where boards are grooved, decide whether the groove goes face up or down and keep it consistent.
Cutting and fixing
Cut ends expose untreated timber, so seal them with a suitable end-grain preserver. Wear gloves and a dust mask when cutting. Use corrosion-resistant screws, and pre-drill near the ends to avoid splits. Browse screws, nails and accessories. Treated timber can react with plain steel, so check what the fixings are made from.
How much to order
Measure the deck area, divide by the board width plus the gap to get the linear metres, then add 10% for waste. For extra grip when wet, see anti-slip decking.
Aftercare
- Brush the surface regularly to clear leaves and prevent algae.
- Apply a decking oil or stain once the timber has dried out, following the product instructions.
- Reseal cuts and drilled holes if you modify the deck later.
